There are some words and phrases I love, but when I use them, people look at me like I’m nuts. What can I say? I’ve read many 1800-1900 books and I know what their terms and exclamatory words were, and let me tell you, they’re a lot better than some that are commonly used nowadays. It may also be possible that when I use these terms I sound extremely European. Again, I have read much European Literature. But here are some terms and sayings which I think are quite clever and enjoyable to say. I hope that you will start using some of these. JOIN THE CLUB!!!
Capital! (This is a word which can take the place of ‘excellent’ or ‘wonderful’. For example: “Are you coming with us? Capital! Let’s go.” This term was used commonly during the 18th and 19th century)
Christopher Columbus! (This word is an exclamatory. When something surprises you, or something bad happens, I like to say, “Christopher Columbus!” This term was used commonly during the 18th century.)
“Say, - -” (This word could take the place of, “I have an idea,” or “I know the answer” for example, “Say, why don’t we go to dinner tonight?” Or, “Say, it was that fellow I met yesterday!” This term, I believe, was commonly used during both the 18th and 19th century)
“Oy!” (This word can catch someone’s attention, or can mean, ‘you over there’. In fact, there are many situations in which this word would be appropriate to use, so just use it! This term is commonly used in England even today)
“Crikey!” (This is a word which I believe is still used in Australia, but have you ever heard anyone say it? Crikey can take the place of “Oh my!” etc. )
I hope that you liked my short list, and will use a few of these words in the future. Yes, this was definitely very Europeanly nerdy of me (I doubt that Europeanly is a word but it makes sense in this case) but that you enjoyed it anyway.
