Book Review On: 'North! Or Be Eaten' By Andrew Peterson

Updated: Jul 2, 2021

Here's a review on the next book in the Wingfeather Saga series by artist, song writer and author Andrew Peterson. Wit Bro, do not read this because it will give you some spoilers.

The dawn sang through the windows in fat, golden beams, and to his great confusion, tears rose from somewhere deep inside him and rolled down his face.

He decided to help them.

-Andrew Peterson, North! Or Be Eaten

Janner, Tink, and Leeli are all trying to process what's happened to them, and Tink seems to be taking it the hardest. Instead of being safe in their cozy cottage in Glipwood, they are now on the run from the evil Fangs of Dang. Instead of sleeping in beds at night, they are sleeping on dirt floors, or on the ground. Instead of having plenty of food to eat and assurance that everything will be all right they are often going hungry and worry that they might not escape from all the darkness that's chasing their entire family.

Although Janner has always wanted to go on an adventure, this isn't what he had hoped for. Sailing on a ship across the Dark Sea, which is what he had planned to do, is a lot different than outsmarting Stranders and killing toothy cows. Of course, it isn't very hard to outsmart a Strander. Usually...

On top of all the insecurity all around them, Janner and Tink's relationship is on edge. They agree on almost nothing. Janner likes to be cautious and make sure they are well prepared and know what to expect, while Tink likes to rush into a situation head on.

Janner wants to explain to Tink that they aren't who they were anymore, and that the place the Maker has put them in is where they are supposed to be...But Tink doesn't want to listen...and this folly they both may regret for the rest of their lifes...

This is my favorite Andrew Peterson book. I would advise age 11 or 12 to read it, but it really depends on how intense a story you can handle. This is a book filled with family love, and it's a good reminder that we won't always have our original families. It's a reminder that Every Day Counts.
